Scanning Process
Scope & Asset Discovery
Confirm the internet-facing IP addresses, domains and components within PCI DSS scan scope with the ASV partner. Reconcile cloud and hosted assets, exclusions, scanning permissions and any controls that could interfere with a complete scan.
Approved Scanning Vendor Scan
Our ASV partner performs external vulnerability scans of the agreed in-scope assets. 443 Labs coordinates the quarterly schedule and supports remediation; the ASV validates the scan results.
Finding Analysis & False Positive Review
Our analysts help prioritize findings and gather evidence for disputes. The ASV partner evaluates and documents false-positive requests under the ASV Program Guide.
ASV Reporting & Rescans
The ASV partner issues reports reflecting the validated results. Where a scan fails, remediate the findings and rescan. A passing report is issued only when the ASV confirms that the applicable passing criteria are met.
Scan Scope
ASV scans are external-only — they test all internet-facing IP addresses in PCI DSS scope. The following guide clarifies what is included, what requires pre-approval, and what sits outside ASV scope.

Engagement Deliverables
Four quarterly scan cycles.
Remediation and rescan support.
Quarterly ASV Scan Reports (×4)
Reports for the four quarterly scan cycles, recording the ASV partner’s validated results. Passing status depends on meeting the ASV passing criteria.
Vulnerability Analysis Detail
Analyst-reviewed findings with CVE context, severity ratings, and remediation prioritisation for each scan cycle.
Unlimited Rescan Coverage
Rescans after remediation included at no additional charge within the annual programme scope.
Annual Compliance Summary
Consolidated annual view of scan history, vulnerability trends, and remediation status for QSA and management reporting.
ASV scans performed and validated by our ASV partner
All external IP addresses and internet-facing services covered
Analyst-reviewed findings with false positive resolution included
Partner-issued reports recording the validated scan results
Why 443 Labs
The ASV difference that matters at submission.
Partner-Delivered ASV Scanning
443 Labs coordinates your programme with an ASV partner. The partner performs the ASV scans and validates reports; our team supports scoping, remediation and evidence preparation.
Analyst-Reviewed Results
Every finding is reviewed by a qualified security analyst before delivery. You receive CVE-contextualised results with remediation prioritisation — not raw scanner output.
False Positive Review Support
We help collect the technical evidence for false-positive disputes and coordinate review with the ASV partner. The ASV determines the outcome; review time depends on the evidence and findings.
Flat-Rate Annual Programme
The annual programme covers four quarterly scans, analyst support and rescans within the agreed scope. Confirm asset coverage and programme terms before starting; fees do not guarantee a passing result.
Engagement Delivery
A quarterly programme that runs itself.
443 Labs coordinates the scan schedule, finding review, remediation support and report delivery with the ASV partner. Your team addresses vulnerabilities, and the ASV validates passing status after the required criteria are met.
Scope Confirmation
Define all external IPs and hostnames in scope before the first scan, with documentation for your QSA file.
Quarterly Scan Execution
Automated scans executed on schedule with analyst review before any results are released to your team.
Finding Analysis & Prioritisation
All vulnerabilities reviewed with CVSS scoring, CVE context, and remediation priority recommendations.
Rescan After Remediation
Coordinate rescans with the ASV partner after remediation. Agree scheduling and rescan coverage in the annual programme scope.
ASV Report Delivery
Partner-issued ASV reports documenting scan results, with passing status only after the applicable criteria are met.
Not Sure Where to Start
We'll scope your ASV programme and confirm what's required.
Confirm the in-scope assets, scanning permissions and quarterly schedule with our team. We coordinate scans and rescans with the ASV partner and help your team prepare the resulting evidence for assessment.
443 Labs coordinates the programme; ASV scanning and report validation are performed by the ASV partner. Check the current PCI SSC ASV directory before engagement. Use the PCI DSS v4.0.1 standard and ASV Program Guide to confirm the applicable scope and passing criteria.
Before Your First Scan
Use this programme when your validation route requires ASV external scan evidence. Confirm applicability and submission expectations with your assessor or the party requesting compliance evidence.
Prepare an inventory of public IP addresses and domain names, relevant cloud and hosting providers, previous ASV reports and open findings. Identify an asset owner and technical contact who can confirm scope, coordinate scan permissions and respond to issues during the agreed window.
Discuss load balancers, shared hosting and security controls with the ASV partner before scanning so the scan can complete without interference. Keep remediation time in the calendar: a scheduled scan does not guarantee a passing report.
Organise reports, finding owners and rescan evidence using the PCI DSS readiness checklist and evidence register. For the wider assessment, see the assessment, cost and timeline guide. PCI SSC explains why an ASV report is one part of compliance evidence.
Common Questions
Who performs the ASV scans?
The ASV partner performs the scans and validates the ASV reports. 443 Labs coordinates the engagement and supports scoping, remediation and evidence preparation. Confirm the scanning vendor and its current PCI SSC listing before the engagement.
What is an ASV scan?
An Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) scan is an automated external vulnerability scan of all internet-facing IP addresses in scope for PCI DSS. It is required quarterly under PCI DSS Requirement 11.3.2 and must be conducted by a PCI SSC-approved vendor.
How often must ASV scans be conducted?
Where Requirement 11.3.2 applies, perform external ASV scans at least once every three months and resolve findings to meet the ASV passing criteria. Initial compliance has specific evidence conditions; confirm these with your assessor. External scans after significant changes are a separate requirement.
What happens if a scan fails?
A failed scan requires remediation of the identified vulnerabilities and a rescan to achieve a passing result. Our team provides remediation guidance and conducts rescans at no additional charge within the annual programme scope.
Can 443 Labs handle multi-site scanning?
Yes. 443 Labs coordinates scoping and scanning with the ASV partner across the agreed sites, IP ranges and distributed environments. Confirm asset coverage, scanning permissions and reporting requirements before the programme starts.
Do ASV scans satisfy PCI DSS Requirement 11.3 fully?
An ASV scan addresses the external ASV scanning requirement in 11.3.2. Internal vulnerability scanning under 11.3.1, scans after significant changes and penetration testing under 11.4 are separate activities where applicable. A passing ASV report does not establish overall PCI DSS compliance.
